What is the Wet Belt?
The 2.0L Panther engine, found in 2016 onward s Transit and Transit Custom models, features a unique timing system design known as the wet belt. This belt operates in engine oil, connecting the camshafts to the crankshaft via an idler gear, which also connects the high-pressure fuel pump to the crankshaft. The timing setup is crucial for the engine’s proper operation, as these engines are interference engines—meaning that incorrect timing or a snapped belt can result in catastrophic engine failure.
Recommended Replacement Interval
While Ford recommends replacing the wet belt every 120,000 miles, our extensive experience with Ford vehicles suggests a more conservative approach. We’ve encountered numerous cases of belt failures, sometimes as early as 30,000 miles. Based on this, we recommend replacing the wet belt at 60,000 miles to avoid potential engine damage.
Ford’s 20B44 Timing Belt Inspection Recall
Ford has issued a recall, known as the 20B44 timing belt inspection, for some 2L Panther engines. Unfortunately, not all engines are covered under this recall. If your vehicle is included, the technician will remove the oil cap housing and inspect the belt through the oil fill hole. If replacement is necessary, the recall covers the belt, tension-er, and an inspection of the oil strainer. The oil and oil filter will also be replaced.
However, the recall does not include the oil pump belt. This is another crucial rubber belt that operates in oil. If it fails, the oil pump stops, leading to engine seizure due to oil starvation.
